Importance of Maintenance, Even While Driving Less

Vehicle owners sometimes assume that they don’t have to put as much effort into vehicle maintenance if they’re not using their vehicle very much. Many drivers out there don’t need to drive as much as they used to right now. Vehicle owners need to understand that a vehicle still needs maintenance even when it’s not getting a lot of use. If you need or have questions about maintenance, you can come to us at Scott Robinson Honda Service for assistance. Our dealership is located off Crenshaw Boulevard in Torrance. That’s right by the southwestern corner of Charles H. Wilson Park. We’re close to Redondo Beach, Carson, Gardena, and Long Beach.

Time-Based Vehicle Service Needs

As a motorist, you might be used to hearing that certain services are necessary once you have put a certain amount of miles on your vehicle. You therefore might think that you can wait a long time before getting maintenance when you’re not putting many miles on your vehicle. However, there are a lot of vehicle maintenance procedures that should be done within a given period of time regardless of how many miles you have put on the vehicle in question. Take engine oil changes as an example. Oil changes are often recommended once every 5,000 miles. Yet it’s important not to wait more than a year before getting an oil change even if you haven’t put 5,000 miles on your vehicle within that year.

The Importance of Driving Your Vehicle

It’s always important to drive your vehicle at least once in a while even if you don’t need to. Your vehicle’s mechanical condition can suffer if you leave it sitting too long without taking it out for a drive. As a general rule, you should take your vehicle out for a drive of at least 20 minutes every week. By driving for 20 minutes, you’ll be sure that your alternator runs long enough to recharge your battery. Regular driving doesn’t just benefit your battery. It also benefits your tires and braking system. If your vehicle sits for too long, your tires could start to develop flat spots and rust can develop on your brake rotors.

Maintaining Your Tires

You should be paying attention to your tires if your vehicle is sitting for a long period of time. Over time, the tire pressure in your tires could drop. That’s why it’s good to check your tire pressure once in a while. If necessary, put some air in your tires to return your tire pressure to the appropriate range.
